Find the official form page, check the edition and page footers, and keep a download record before preparing a paper filing.
Start at the official form page
An old download can look almost identical to a newer form. Open the USCIS page for the form you have already identified through its instructions or qualified guidance. This guide does not choose an application for your situation. Read the instructions linked on the official page instead of relying on a forwarded file or an old search preview.
Read the edition information before downloading
Find the edition information and any update notice on that form page. Read the complete notice rather than relying on a date in a filename or someone else's screenshot. Download the form and its instructions there and note when you checked them. This guide does not list a permanent current edition: instructions can change. Resolve uncertainty about a particular copy with USCIS or qualified assistance before using it.
Compare every page footer
USCIS's paper-filing tips say to use the current edition, keep edition dates and page numbers visible, and use pages from the same edition. Inspect every page of your download for missing, duplicate or mismatched pages. Do not change an old form's edition label to make it appear current. Return to the official download if the copies do not match.
Keep an intact download and a simple source record
Separate the original form, its instructions and your personal notes. A private note can record the official page URL, download date and edition observed. Avoid identity numbers or private case details in public examples and filenames. Renaming a file helps you locate it; it does not change its edition or prove that its answers are complete.
Inspect the copy you will actually print
Open the saved download in a separate PDF reader and inspect print preview. Check the page edges, readable footers and last page, then follow the form's printing and filing instructions. These checks concern a downloaded form for paper preparation; official online filing is a separate process. Checking an edition does not verify answers, signatures, fees, evidence or acceptance. This guide does not recommend editing an official form in SnippyPDF: its public trial adds watermarks and does not validate USCIS forms.
Recheck the source before relying on an older copy
Revisit the official page and compare it with your download record before using an older working copy. If the source changed, read the notice rather than assuming the saved file is suitable. SnippyPDF is independent of USCIS and the U.S. government. This is a document-checking workflow, not legal advice or an eligibility decision. Official guidance was checked October 20, 2026; follow the current official instructions when preparing your filing.
